Lumber demand from single-family home construction and remodeling is volatile - the last few years alone have seen major swings from the COVID pandemic in 2020 to high interest rates last year. To minimize the impact of that volatility on the wood products industry, the work of the Softwood Lumber Board to expand and diversify softwood lumber demand into commercial construction is significant.
The SLB continues to defend share of market in single-family and outdoor applications while pursuing new market opportunities in non-residential and multifamily construction. To maximize those opportunities, the SLB invests in Education, the American Wood Council, Think Wood, and WoodWorks to influence key decision makers for these building types and convert more projects to wood.

One-hundred-seventy exhibitors have signed up for the upcoming Timber Processing & Energy Expo (TP&EE) to be held September 25-27 at the Portland Exposition Center in Portland, Ore. They'll showcase their technologies and supplies to lumbermen on 45,000 square feet of booth space in Hall E.
Attendee registration opens July 15 on the timberprocessingandenergyexpo.com web site. Admission is free to anybody who registers prior to the beginning of the show.
TP&EE will once again feature its massive Beer Garden, the presentation ceremony for the 2024 Timber Processing Person of the Year, and the Sawmill Productivity & Efficiency Conference, details of which will be released in June.
TP&EE continues it Preferred Partners program, which is an alliance with several industry groups to support promotions and attendance. Western Wood Products Association is once again one of the Preferred Partners and will have an exhibit at TP&EE.
The event is produced by Hatton-Brown Expositions and hosted by Timber Processing magazine.
To make housing more affordable across the United States, a variety of housing types are needed - especially multifamily. Here's how the SLB is working to secure the industry's position in medium - and high-density residential construction.
Single-family residential construction and renovations have long been the primary market for the lumber industry. But single-family construction alone will not meet the demand for housing in the United States - nor will it be a driver for incremental growth in lumber demand.
A shortage of housing is causing major affordability issues across the country. The Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University's 2024 America's Rental Housing report found that a record-high 22.4 million renter households spent more than 30 percent of their income on rent and utilities, more than at any other time in history, as rent increases have outpaced income gains for decades.

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of James R. Mathews. Jim was a WWPA Lumber Inspector and Master Lumberman, but he is most remembered by his colleagues and those in the industry as a great friend and mentor.
Jim spent 42 years working in the lumber industry. He began his career with Weyerhaeuser Company, Klamath Falls, Oregon in 1970. He worked in most of the planing mill positions until moving into the Lumber Grading Department as a student grader in 1972. Jim was first certified in 1974 in Commons and then subsequently earned certificates in all NGR Grades, Shop and Selects. He remained within the Grading Department for the next 17 years as a Certified Lumber Grader, Quality Control Supervisor or Grading Department Shift Supervisor.
Jim joined the WWPA as a Lumber Inspector in 1987 overseeing the California Southern Central Valley. In 1989 He was moved to the WWPA Portland office where he served in several capacities; Director, Japanese Lumber Inspection; Assistant Director, Coast/California; Assistant Director; all within the Quality Services Division.
In 2012 Jim was awarded the prestigious Master Lumberman award. When asked how he got started in the business as a lumber grader, Jim replied with his typical humor.
"That first winter was a learning curve. Although I had lived in Klamath Falls my entire life, I really wasn’t prepared enough for the cold weather. I did look around (the mills) and see the only jobs that had a heater was the lumber graders. So, I decided I was going to be a lumber grader so I could have a heater also.
The highlight of my career was in the mid 1980's when the opportunity came along to join the WWPA as a lumber inspector. I strived for that position for a number of years."
After 25 years with WWPA, Jim retired in the Spring of 2012 as the Quality Assurance Administrative Manager.
Jim has left an impressive legacy on WWPA and the industry as a whole. His in-depth knowledge of U.S. and international lumber standards, his work ethic and commitment to excellence, along with his great sense of humor, will be greatly missed.
The 2024 WWPA Annual Meeting will be held April 14 through 16 in Vancouver Washington at the Hotel Indigo Vancouver Downtown.
The 2024 event will include the (Welcome Reception and Exchange Show), Quality Standards & Technical Services Committee Meeting, Master Lumberman & Safety Awards, Speakers Session and (Chairman's Reception and Exchange Show).

The 2019 cycle of WWPA Notification Service for the targeted compliance date of February 28, 2019 has been completed. 38 companies subscribed. Delivery status will be sent out in the coming weeks.
WWPA's Prop 65 Wood Dust Notification Program is available to all Lumber & Wood products manufacturers and distributors; membership with WWPA is not required. As a subscriber, all that you have to do is to provide WWPA with your customer lists, which are kept confidential.
Once we have a signed agreement and receive your customer data we will:
Provide each customer on the subscribing company's list with the safe harbor warning information and signage necessary to comply with the new regulations. A durable warning sign covering exposures to wood dust and other chemicals is sent to each California address.
Compile confirmations of receipt of the warning materials
Provide a delivery confirmation status report upon completion of the annual notification cycle to each service subscriber.
Retain customer confirmation of receipt data for the subscribing company, making it available if it is ever needed.
WWPA has been offering this service since 2011 and it has been cost effective and successful for our subscribers. For the 2020 Cycle Notification Service, new subscribers need to sign-up by December 2019.
