The university recognized Brinkmeyer for his contributions to the forestry and wood products industry and awarded him the Doctor of Natural Resources degree. U of I awards honorary degrees to individuals deserving of honor by virtue of scholarly distinction, noteworthy public service or significant contributions to Idaho.

Ray Barbee, WWPA President, offered his thoughts on Brinkmeyer's achievement: "It is gratifying to see this honor bestowed upon Marc for all the time and effort he has invested in the forest products industry, as well as his many humanitarian contributions."
